5 movie scenes more apt for Alan Pardew than the restaurant scene in Heat

Written by Jim Daly

Palace fans haven’t heard from Alan Pardew in a while, since he was sacked back in late December in fact.

But he had his first interview since then this week and opened up to The Times about his departure from Selhurst Park.

It was supposed to be the match made in heaven; an Eagles cult hero returning to the place he played and scored arguably the club’s most famous ever goal (an FA Cup semi-final extra time winner over Liverpool in 1990).

And while there were plenty of classic Pardew excuses during the interview there was one particular quote that jumped out; Pardew comparing being a manager to a scene from 1995 gangster movie Heat, starring Robert de Niro and Al Pacino.

In this scene enemies Al Pacino and Robert de Niro finally meet on screen, cop facing master criminal. As they casually chat, Pacino’s character explains that while it was nice to connect over a cup of coffee they will always be enemies. “You do what you do, and I do what I gotta do,” he says. “We’ve been face to face, yeah,” De Niro responds. “But I will not hesitate, not for a second.”

“It’s a bit like us in football,” Pardew said while referring to the scene. “Chairman, manager, you do what you gotta do. But it’s not personal. It’s the business.”

But for Palace fans this scene isn’t Pardew. It isn’t Pardew at all.

So here are five movie scenes that are much more applicable for Alan Pardew...

1. Are You Not Entertained?

Pardew constantly went on about how much good football his team played, and Palace fans were all for it, but when the results stopped coming it started to grate.

At points he was like Maximus Decimus Meridius from Gladiator, calling to the booing crowd “Are You Not Entertained?”.

As Sam Allardyce has since proven sometimes you need to go back to basics to get points, and no Eagles fans are moaning about not being entertained. In fact, winning, it turns out, is pretty entertaining.

2. The Headbutt

It’s impossible to think of Pardew without that headbutt on David Meyler at Hull.

Yes he was Newcastle manager at the time, but that moment has followed him for the rest of his career. To be honest, most Palace fans were just surprised we didn’t get to see something similar during his two years on the Selhurst touchline.

Although we did get a moment just as embarrassing…

3. The Dad Dance

Pardew pulling out his dad dance moves on the Wembley touchline will sadly forever be associated with the 2016 FA Cup final, a day that should have gone down as one of Palace’s best ever.

Instead we lost to Manchester United again and have to watch Pardew doing his best John Travolta impression forever.

4. The Thumbs Up

/p>

One of the moments it became clear Pardew was losing the plot at Palace was his thumbs up towards a clearly embarrassed Steve Parish after the Eagles beat an awful Southampton side at Selhurst Park in December.

It looked like a man trying to convince everyone everything was ok while things were falling apart, a bit like the Terminator’s thumbs up as he literally goes down in flames.

5. Anything from I, Partridge

You could literally pick any scene from the Alan Partridge movie and it would be like taking a glimpse into Pardew’s time as manager at Palace, although this particular scene where the fictional Alan enjoys the limelight is particularly apt.

Former Palace coach Tony Popovic reveals his thoughts on Sam Allardyce

Written by Jim Daly

Tony Popovic still looks out for Palace's results and hopes Sam Allardyce pulls the Eagles away from the drop.

The Australian served as a player and a coach in SE25 and is now back in his home land as manager of Western Sydney Wanderers in his first managerial role.

In fact, he left Palace in 2012 to become Wanderers' first ever manager as the club was formed, and then led them to the A League title in their very first seasom

And he told FYP TV that he hopes Allardyce brings similar success to Palace.

"Anyone that's played football always follows a club they've been at and I certainly do [look out for Palace's results], and I hope to see them climb up the table as soon as possible," he said.

"I think whenever there is a change in football the expectations are very high there and Sam is certainly a big manager and a big personality and I hope he does very well."

Popovic revealed that he owes a lot to former Palace boss Dougie Freedman for taking a chance on him back in 2011.

He added: "I was an assistant at Sydney FC at the time and Dougie got the manager's job. I was delighted that he gave me a call to come and join him on this new challenge and journey that he was on. It was a fantastic experience and a great learning curve for me; 18 months of seeing every aspect of the football club. So I always look back on that time and know that I've taken a lot out of that."

Mamadou Sakho reveals why he was so good on his Palace debut vs Boro

Written by FYP Fanzine

Was Mamadou Sakho's debut for Palace the best ever?

It was certainly up there. The monstrous centre-back was a rock against Middlesbrough and brought the sort of passion and organision that has been missing in the Eagles' backline all season.

He helped secure a rare clean sheet as Palace managed a precious 1-0 win over their relegation rivals.

And the on-loan defender has revealed why he hit the ground running so well, despite not playing a first-team game since last April.

“My last game was ten months ago but during this time I have been working hard on my fitness and, after my performance, it has all been worthwhile.” he said.

“I am really proud to be involved in this victory, and from my point of view it is always about me giving my best when I am out on the pitch for the club, the team and the supporters.

He added: “We played twelve against eleven in this game because the fans were really good for us and they gave us a lot of courage and confidence.

“It was nice to get the result for them.

“We played very well as a team, gave a strong performance and deserved the three points in a really difficult game.”

See how well Sakho played in the video below...

Sam Allardyce agreed. “It was a nice performance.” he said.

“It was his first Premier League game this season, so we spent a good bit of time on his fitness and he’s accepted that he had to put that extra work in.” he added.

More of the same please Mamadou!

Clinton Morrison picks his all-time team-mate XI - and there are some Palace players in it

Written by FYP Fanzine

Everone still loves Clinton Morrison.

Even though he left for Birmingham with Steve Bruce in 2002, Palace got Andy Johnson in return so that worked out for everyone.

And when Clinton returned in 2007 he continued to bang the goals in the Palace and broke the 100-goal mark so all was forgiven.

And the former Eagles striker, who scored 112 goals in 305 games for the club, appeared on Sky Sports' Fantasy Football to pick his all-time XI.

Team-mates from Birmingham City and the Ireland national team - who he travlled to the 2002 World Cup with - also featured, but there were a few familiar Palace names in there.

Click on this link to see who Clinton picks in his all-time XI of team-mates.

While on the show picking his team, he offerd up some great stories about team-mates including giving Bruce Dyer jip in the CPFC training ground as a youngster.

He also recounted being driven to training by Eagles legend Attilio Lombardo, which you can watch below...

How Palace could do with a goalscorer of his quality now, eh?

STATS Don't Lie - Crystal Palace are Likely to Go Down

Written by Robert Sutherland

Defeat2

Want further confirmation that the odds are stacked against Crystal Palace in this relegation fight? How about these stats from STATS, the owners of ProZone (used by professional clubs to gauge player performance and more) which underline just how bleak Palace's situation is.

Palace are, according to the data, 70% likely to be relegated. The data, compiled using the STATS Football Analytics Engine, aggregates results to calculate the outcome and exact score probabilities for the remaining 12 games of the season, plotting the final league position of each of the 20 Premier League clubs.

The Eagles are predicted to finish 19th, taking the previous 36 results of the season into account in order to predict the next 12.

Patrick Lucey, Director of Data Science at STATS, says that the conclusion wasn't just reached by averaging results out.

“Utilizing our depth of player tracking and match data, the STATS Football Analytics Engine simulates each fixture 500 times based on factors such as playing styles, goal threat as well as a team’s reaction to conceding," he said.

"It’s the understanding of these factors that means better informed team and player decisions, maximizing performance”.

Here's hoping that Palace can somehow beat the system -- by beating some opponents along the way.

Brede Hangeland reveals Pardew made him scout his own replacement at Palace - and he chose James Tomkins

Written by FYP Fanzine

Palace didn't exactly see Brede Hangeland's best days at the club but he was always a popular, friendly figure and left with the best wishes of all the fans.

But today he revealed that when he told Alan Pardew he was retiring from football the former Eagles boss made him scout his own replacement at centre-back.

And he chose James Tomkins. The West Ham defender promptly signed for Palace for £10m this summer.

Speaking to Norwegian radio show 'Heia Fotbal' Hangeland was asked about Pardew.

"Everyones seen him dancing in the FA-cup final and not all the players were happy with that but he was a cool guy," he said.

"He was more interested in attack than defense though for sure. After I told him my body was more or less done and that I was retiring he sent me across the country and wanted me to scout my own replacement.

"After scouting you have to write reports and then he decided if he wanted to go forward with this. Pardew told me I knew more about being a CB than most in the premier league. I ended up recommending Tomkins."

Tomkins signed for Palace last summer for £10m and has looked fairly decent in the games he's played so far, so we have Brede to thank for that!

He was also asked about playing with Emmanuel Adebayor and came up with a couple of pretty incredible stories.

He said: "I played for Fulham and he played for Spurs. We were attacking and I was marking Adebayor in the midfield, suddenly he says 'ahhh, I'm hungry'. I replied 'what?'. 'I can't wait for the game to finish, I'm so hungry. Do you know a good restaurant in London?'.

He added: "Later when he came to Palace I started to realized where this came from. When we had strength workouts he would sit in the gym with just a cup of coffee and a muffin. He was being paid by City, Tottenham and Palace at the same time, and he was sitting in the gym drinking coffee. Incredible natural talent, very lazy."

Crazy.
